Jean-Louis Chavy

As a offspring of a winemaker family based in Puligny-Montrachet since 1820, Jean-Louis started his own domain in 2003. The winery is now in the 6th generation. The terroir from Puligny-Montrachet is special and differs from that of the neighboring communities Meursault and Chassagne-Montrachet in particular through its stony, limestone soils, which only have a small layer of topsoil. This special feature creates particularly mineral-rich wines with an outstanding complexity. Jean-Louis Chavy is already one of the best winegrowers in his community and his wines are very rare.

Oliver and I know and admire the wines of Jean-Louis Chavy for years and - admittedly - may have been its most thirsty private customers for a long time. Since 2015, there has been almost no vintage or no appellation that we have not enjoyed. Sometimes even more than one bottle at once....

The 2022 vintage is another work of art and fascinates once again. We were able to get some selected quantities on site in his beautiful cellar! It doesn't have much, but if everyone share, everyone gets a sip. In addition to the 2022, we are particularly proud of the few bottles of the 2020 1er Series Cru «Les Folatières». At this year's tasting, we were able to spot half a pallet of this excellent 2020. The pallet was originally intended for a Russian customer, but his thirst has apparently been ruined by the weak rouble and the sanctions.

Jean-Louis Chavy is and remains a “trouvaille”. He is also a very pleasant person who works hard for his wines and customers every day. Such wineries could certainly be sold for a two-, perhaps even for a three-digit million amount. Quite enough for your own life and certainly enough for a few more grandchildren! However, the family remains true to their passion. In the meantime, his son Paul also produces his own wines. Perhaps we can also have a few bottles of wines here in the future. He is considered one of the new young “shooting stars” in Burgundy. Like father, like son....
